Marriage Name Change in Pennsylvania

Agency: Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Deadline: Pennsylvania does not set a strict deadline, but update promptly to avoid mismatches.

To change the name on your Pennsylvania driver license, complete form DL-80 (Non-Commercial Driver's License Application for Change/Correction/Replacement) or DL-80CD for a CDL. For a REAL ID name change, you must visit a Driver License Center in person with original name-change documents. PennDOT verifies your name with SSA.

Bring these documents:

• Updated Social Security card (reflecting your new name)
• Certified marriage certificate (original, raised seal)
• Completed form DL-80 (download from PennDOT)
• Current Pennsylvania driver license or ID card
• For REAL ID: original name-change documents presented in person

For a REAL ID name change, you must visit a PennDOT Driver License Center in person; mail-in is not accepted for REAL ID updates.

Update Social Security first, then your Pennsylvania driver license — Pennsylvania agencies verify your new name against Social Security records, so going the other way causes rejections and wasted trips. Your U.S. passport is a separate, independent update: you do not need a new passport to get your license, and you can renew it whenever it suits your travel plans. Banks, employer, insurance, and the rest come after your license.
