Marriage Name Change in North Carolina

North Carolina requires you to notify the NCDMV within 60 days of a name change and obtain a duplicate license. The NCDMV confirms your name change with the Social Security Administration's Online Verification System, so the SSA step must be completed first. You can order a replacement online, at a kiosk, or at a driver license office.

Bring these documents:

• Updated Social Security card (reflecting your new name)
• Certified marriage certificate (original, raised seal)
• Current North Carolina driver license or ID card

North Carolina's 60-day notification window is stricter than most states. The NCDMV checks SSA records electronically, so if your SSA update hasn't processed yet (typically 24-48 hours), your DMV application may be rejected.
